By 1944 this was already an obsolete configuration, but examples were to be found in many units, as were captured vehicles and tanks (mostly French). The lightly armored half track offered little crew protection, and the position of the gun high on the cargo bed meant even more unwanted exposure. A PAK 40 on a carriage mount could be fired from an entrenched position and was more readily camouflaged.
